STATE HIGHWAY 1 ROADWORKS TO PREPARE FOR OPENING OF NEW GLENAVY DAIRY FACTORY

A significant road-works project on State Highway 1 at Glenavy will commence in early October to prepare for the opening of the $214 million Oceania Dairy processing plant.

A slip lane, turning lane and lighting will be added to the intersection of State Highway 1 and Cooneys Road to cater for the increase in frequency and size of vehicles using the intersection when the factory opens in the middle of 2014.

“At full capacity, the Glenavy processing plant will process 300 million litres of milk per year. That will generate 47,000 tonnes of milk powder each year,” said Aidan Johnstone, Oceania Dairy Chief Executive Officer.

“That will result in a significant increase in traffic flows into and out of the factory site as we build towards opening the factory and then commencing production.

“As part of our overall development programme for the plant, we are undertaking up to six weeks work on SH1 to make that part of the highway safer for all users,” he said.

The development work has been approved by New Zealand Transport Agency, who owns the asset.

“The contractor will develop a comprehensive traffic management plan to manage safety and traffic flow through this major programme of road works,” said Johnstone.

“There is likely to be some interruption to the flow of traffic around the intersection but we are confident that the work can be completed quickly and safely with minimal impact on local road users,” he said.

Oceania Dairy will contract with up to 40 local farmers for the 2014-15 supply season to deliver 130 million litres of milk in the first year of operation.

The factory will employ approximately 70 permanent staff, with the majority expected to be recruited locally.
