Oceania teams up with the Waitaki Riparian Enhancement Society

Oceania Dairy is delighted to announce an exciting new sponsorship with the Waitaki Riparian Enhancement Society.

The volunteer organisation, based in Glenavy, runs a Salmon Hatchery for the enhancement of wild salmon in the Waitaki River.

The group, consisting of 200 members, was formed in 2011 following a steady decline in the number of salmon that were once abundant in rivers and streams in the South Canterbury region.

Oceania Dairy have committed to a three year deal that sees funds go towards purchasing feed for their programme.

“I’m really grateful for the opportunity to be associated with the Waitaki Riparian Enhancement Society through this sponsorship to supply feed for the regeneration of salmon in our local waterways,” says Oceania General Manager, Roger Usmar.

“We have been looking for unique ways to give back to the community and believe this is also a great way to show support for the environment and the region where we live and work.”

The partnership also aligns with Oceania’s support of the Sustainable Dairying Water Accord. Oceania became a signatory to the Accord which is a set of good management practice benchmarks aimed at lifting both environmental performance and reporting on New Zealand dairy farms. Oceania are currently collecting environmental information from supplying farms for reporting later this year.

“The Waitaki River is the main source of irrigation water to a significant number of our suppliers both in North Otago and South Canterbury, and is of huge value economically, culturally, environmentally and also as a significant area for recreation,” Roger Usmar added.

“We look forward to the beginning of a successful and progressive partnership,” he added.
